THE LIFE OF A
WORKING MUSCLE

In short: A muscle grows in a chain of steps — tension, signal, response, and rebuild. Let's follow one muscle through a single workout to see how it works.

1.The lift: tension is applied

You pick up the weight and start your set. As the muscle works to move the load, its fibres come under mechanical tension — a strong physical pull inside each muscle cell. This is the event that starts everything. No tension means no growth. This is why a marathon runner, even after hours of hard effort, never builds big leg muscles. Effort alone is not the trigger. Tension is.

2.The signal: the cell measures the work

The muscle does not simply "know" it lifted something heavy. It has to measure it. Inside each fibre are tiny sensors. They feel the tension and turn it into a chemical message. Research shows that this tension is the main driver of muscle growth from training, working through these sensors that detect it and respond (in a process researchers call "resistance-training–induced muscle hypertrophy through mechanotransductive signaling") (Roberts et al., 2025; Schoenfeld, 2010). In simple words: the cell reads how hard the set was. If the set was hard enough, the cell sends an order — we must get bigger and stronger to handle this next time.

3.The response: the growth order is sent

That order turns on the muscle's building process. The fibre starts to make new proteins to make itself stronger for the future. This is the growth response. But at this point, it is only an instruction. Nothing is built yet. When you leave the gym, the signal is running, but the muscle is not bigger — not yet.

4.The rebuild: materials do the work

Now the muscle needs supplies and time. Two things decide how much of the signal becomes real muscle:

With enough food and rest, the muscle rebuilds a little bigger and stronger than before. This is why growth happens between workouts, not during them. Training sends the order. Recovery completes it.

The loop

That is the full cycle: tension → signal → response → rebuild. Then you repeat it, a little harder each time. Every other article in this hub looks closely at one step in this chain.
