In short: Tension is what makes muscle grow — and a muscle produces the strongest tension when it works in a stretched position. That means a full, controlled range of motion matters more than the size of the weight.
First, a reminder: tension is the driver
In the last article we followed a muscle through one workout: tension, signal, response, rebuild. The first step — tension — is the one that starts everything.
It is worth being clear about why. You will often hear that two other things build muscle: muscle damage (the soreness after a hard session) and metabolic stress (the "burn" during a set). Both can help a little. But neither works on its own, and neither is the main cause. Tension is.
The marathon runner shows this best. A runner finishes a race with plenty of muscle damage and plenty of burn — but never grows big legs. The missing piece is tension. Lots of damage and burn, little tension, almost no growth. So when we ask how to train well, we are really asking one question: how do we produce the most useful tension?
The answer: load the muscle in the stretch
A muscle does not produce the same tension everywhere in a movement. It produces the strongest, most useful tension when it is working in a lengthened — stretched — position. Think of the bottom of a squat, the deep stretch of a Romanian deadlift, or the lowest point of a bicep curl.
When a muscle resists a load while stretched, its internal sensors receive a stronger signal, and the growth message (through the mechanotransduction process from article 1) is stronger too. This is not just theory. Research comparing training in a stretched position against a shortened one has repeatedly found more growth from the stretched position (Pedrosa et al., 2022; Maeo et al., 2021; Kassiano et al., 2023).
What this means for how you lift
If the stretch is where the best tension happens, then cutting your range of motion short throws away your best growth. Half-reps that never reach the stretch skip the most valuable part of the movement.
So the goal is a full, controlled range of motion on every rep — all the way into the stretch, under control, not bouncing or dropping into it. And here is the part most people get wrong: a full range of motion is more important than a big number on the weight. If a heavier weight forces you to shorten your reps or lose control, the weight is too heavy — you are trading your best tension for ego.
A slightly lighter weight moved through a complete, controlled stretch will out-grow a heavier weight moved through half a rep. Every time.
